What’s that song that you just played?

triple j does not publish the daily playlist for general programs. If you’re trying to find the name of a song or artist you’ve heard, there’s a few options:

  1. Check the Hitlist, a list of songs on high rotation on triple j at the moment.

  2. Our specialist shows have their playlists online. Check the program guide for links.

  3. If it was played on weekdays between 9-12 during Mornings with Zan, track details for many of her segments are posted on her blog.
  4. If still no luck, ask the question on the triple j music forum (most posters are helpful).

The other way to learn about radio is by getting involved in community radio. Think about what it is about radio that you enjoy, what you want to learn, what skills you already have, what are you interested in, what kind of music and content do you enjoy. Contact your local community radio station and start doing stuff there. You'll learn invaluable skills and have a great time along the way. It will set you at an advantage. Most people who work at triple j and the ABC in general started in community radio.

What is streaming?

Streaming is the delivery of media (video or audio) content over the Internet using data compression and this process allows the user to start playing the material as it downloads. This saves having to download the entire file before you can play it.

What type of streaming services does triple j offer?

triple j offers three different types of streaming services:

1. live simulcast audio stream: It’s like listening to triple j on the web instead of the switching on the radio. What you hear through the live simulcast stream is basically what is being broadcast on triple j right now (Australian Eastern Standard Time).

2. audio-on-demand streaming: Miss you favourite triple j program or want to hear it again? Luckily for you, many of the triple j programs are available on-demand. Mostly, programs are kept online for one week, apart from the music specials (like the j files) which we try to keep online for longer.

3. video streaming: Check out triple j tv online for new music, interviews, current affairs, documentaries and comedy that takes triple j's irreverence, independence, authority and attitude, and brings it to life in a whole new dimension. You can even subscribe for a weekly dose delivered straight to your desktop..

How do I listen to triple j’s streaming services?

All streams are available in three formats, either Windows Media, Real Player and mp3. These plugins are available for free:

+ DOWNLOAD REAL PLAYER Look closely for the link to the free version (a small link1 link in the top right hand corner of the page. This is not a free trial and you do not have to offer any credit card details.
+ DOWNLOAD WINDOWS MEDIA (also free)
+ DOWNLOAD WINAMP (also free)

What is the data rate of your live simulcast stream?

triple j's Windows Media and Real streams are now delivered as 3 bitrates via multicast streaming - 20 kbps, 44kbps and 96kbps.

MP3 streaming is encoded at 128kbps and you can listen using Winamp player or any other media player.

Can I access triple j live simulcast stream at a higher bitrate for broadband?

You can listen to triple j as a high bitrate stream (96kpbs) if you connect via Windows Media player v9. Or you can listen at 128kbps if you connect to the mp3 stream.

Broadband users may be interested to hear that we are now also offering a selection of our programs in mp3 for download via our podcasting services

What about the other audio-on-demand streams, such as the music specialist programs?

These are generally offered at higher bitrates - 56kbps for WM, and either 56kbps or 96 kbps in Real Player (using Real Surestream).

What about AAC, Ogg Vorbis, Quicktime and other streaming formats?

We do not currently offer any streaming services in these formats, and there are no plans to offer them in the near future unless audience demand for these services increases.

Why am I having trouble connecting to the stream?

There are a number of reasons why you may be having trouble: + If you are connecting from inside a ‘firewall’ (such as inside a corporate or educational institution) you may find you are unable to use the media services. Contact your computer system administrator or IT (Information Technology) department to see if streaming is allowed, or what changes you need to make to the settings in your player. + Some Internet Service Providers (ISPs) do not allow media streaming or require you to alter the settings in your player or browser. If you're connecting through an ISP and having difficulty, contact your ISP's technical help department. + Sometimes the system is congested, which means that too many people are trying to access the streaming service at once. We recommend you try later when the network is quieter.

How do I download an MP3 ?

If you just click on the link as you normally do (left-click), the mp3 file will just play with the browser’s default mp3 player without giving you the option to save, so to download:
+ PC: right-click on the link that points to the file and select "Save Target As..." or "Save File As...", then select a place on your hard drive to save the file to, and it’ll start downloading.
+ Mac: Apple/Ctrl key + click “save file as”

How much hard drive space does an MP3 take up?

For a 3 minute song or interview, it’ll use up around 3-4MB of disk space. The file size will usually be provided next to the mp3 link on the page.

How long will it take to download an mp3?

This will depend on the size of the file, and speed of your internet connection. For a 3-4 minute song, on 56k modem it could take around 5-8 minutes, but with high-speed broadband connections it shouldn’t take any longer than 1-2 minutes to download the same file.

Do I need permission to link to triple j from my website?

We're more than happy for you to link to triple j, but we request that the link should be text link only. Please do not lift graphics or logos off triple j’s website to create a graphical link. Soon we will be making free downloadable graphics for Super Request and the Net 50 that you will be able to publish on your website.

Will triple j link to my website?

The answer to this question is generally ‘No’ (you’ll notice that there is no 'links' page on the triple j website). We don't place links to external websites unless we think they're particularly relevant to the content (for example, we provide links from the feature album reviews or film reviews to the official band or film website, or from music specialist shows). If you are a band who performs live, we try to provide links to band websites when gigs/events are listed in the triple j gig guide.

What is an RSS Feed?

RSS allows quick and simple syndication of our music news, blogs and other program content straight to your news aggregator of choice. An aggregator is (free) software that will collect and display updates from the websites you have subscribed to.

Podcasts are a form of RSS which allow you to subscribe to and download media content. Check out the extensive list of triple j audio podcasts here and subsciption for the triple j tv vodcast here.
