ONE NIGHT STAND ENTRY REVIEWS

Collie, WA

Collie's entry was one of the most impressive entries the judges have ever seen. It was incredibly well laid out with all of the key elements - council and community support, venue viability, the petition, risk assessment - easy to assess. The mini-doco was a lot of fun too. It was easy to see how excited the town is about the One Night Stand rolling in, especially with a petition of over 5000 signatures from a town of about 9000 people.  This was the 3rd year the town has entered and each year their entry just got better and better.  The event itself ran incredibly well, and many many people commented on how well the event was run.  Congratulations Collie.

Port Lincoln, SA

This was a pretty good first entry.  It was well laid out and a bit creative without being over the top, but generally a bit lacking in detail.  The venue looked great, but apart from the basics of letters of support from Council and Police, there wasn’t much else to go on.  Much more work was needed to show actual planning for the event.  And only about 850 signatures on the petition from a town of 14000 isn’t very impressive.  The mini doco was very well put together.

Boyne Island, QLD.

This was an excellent entry, and a fantastic first attempt at the competition.  It was very well laid out, and beautifully presented in its own special aluminium case.  All the essential elements were well thought through.  There was good evidence of community and local business support.  Almost 3000 signatures on the petition from a town of just 3700 is a great effort.  The venue looked great too.  The mini doco was also well put together.  There was strong local media support too.  The only part that was a bit lacking was detail on planning for the event.  This was covered in a pretty general way.  But definitely a great effort.

Swan Hill, VIC

Swan Hill has entered this competition a few times now, and this year was probably one of the least impressive efforts.  While the basics were all there it was let down by 2 factors.  The petition only had 217 signatures from a town of 10000 people, and the mini doco DVD would not play on any device we tried.  There were a few venue pics and a basic map, but not enough to go on.

Kyabram, VIC

This was a good basic entry, but was a bit lacking in detail regarding how the town would handle the event.  The venue looked very suitable, but there was no risk assessment.  A few more venue photos would have helped also.  2800 signatures on the petition from a town of 7000 is OK.  The young team that put the entry together had some technical difficulty with the mini doco, but still did a pretty good job.  Plenty of room for improvement next year.

Calen, QLD

This entry didn’t really cover the basic requirements.  And the mini doco never arrived.  Plenty of room for improvement.  A photo of the venue would have been helpful.

Kiama, NSW

This was a very good basic entry.  There were oddles of pictures of the very attractive venue, and some basic evidence of planning.  But apart from a reasonably healthy petition (3000 signatures from a town of 12000 people) there wasn’t much further evidence of community support.  No letters from the community, and not even a letter from the Council pledging support.  And the mini doco DVD wouldn’t play in any machine we tried.

Gundagai, NSW

This was a very basic entry, put together by a very young team.  While the basics were there, much more depth of thought was required.  And part of the planning was based on charging admission to the event, and this is something we would never do.  While there was a basic letter of support from Council, the official council support form was not completed.  And the DVD disc of the mini doco appeared to be blank.  275 signatures on the petition isn’t very impressive.  Plenty of room for improvement next year.

New Norfolk, TAS

This was an extremely basic entry.  All elements were covered with the bare minimum of detail.  The venue was very attractive, however 75 signatures from a town of over 5000 people is a poor effort.  The mini doco was very direct but did the job.

Sorell, TAS

This was a good basic entry, and a very good first attempt at the competition.  There was strong evidence of wider community support and a decent amount of planning for the event.  The judges would have liked to have seen more pictures of the venue.  There wasn’t much to go on.  The mini doco was OK, and the petition was very healthy with around 1400 signatures from a town of 1500 people.  A very good first effort.

Proserpine, QLD

This was a pretty good entry.  All key requirements were addressed, some better than others.  There was a good amount of thought put into running the event, but the risk assessment lacked detail.  There was only one picture of the venue which wasn’t enough to go on.  A petition of 3600 signatures from a town of 3800 people is an excellent effort.  They also went to a lot of trouble to show the local beauty and attractions of the area.  The mini doco looked great too.  Generally a very good effort.  More detail next time please.

Murray Bridge, SA

This entry was one of the BIGGEST entries we have ever received.  But unfortunately it really didn’t cover the basic requirements of the competition.  No Council support evident, a pretty thin petition, and a fun DVD that couldn’t really pass as a mini doco.  The judges couldn’t count it as a serious or valid entry.

Birchip, VIC

Birchip has entered the competition several times and always does it well.  This year’s entry was also very good.  Strong evidence of local community support, including shop window triple j displays in the main street, and a giant drum logo made up of school students on the school oval were a couple of highlights.  There were many letters of support, and 750 signatures on the petition from a town of 800 people is a very good effort.  They also did a great job with the mini doco.  Definitely a top 5 entry.  Well done.

Campbell Town, TAS

This was an excellent entry, and an outstanding effort as a first time entry.  It was extremely well presented with plenty of information very well laid out and easy to follow.  There was a huge amount of support from all parts of the community, and a petition with 8600 signatures from a town of 800 people is quite an achievement.  The mini doco was also extremely creative and lots of fun.  The judges considered this to be the number 2 entry.  Congratulations on a great job, and better luck next year.
