Chris Scaddan's Athlete goss from backstage:
OK, so the funniest thing I've heard so far out the back is Athlete getting uptight and demanding room temperature water (they had recieved chilled bottles!). But that's really an anomaly, it's all very laid back at the moment. read more >

Here's what you had to say about the Splendour in the Grass performance!

did someone say coldplay? the first half of their set had been completely ripped from a c.play album, and while the rest of the set was much better, they had me on edge because it felt as if they were so close to rocking out and blowing us all away...but they just held back

Of the 4 Pom bands, Athlete were the worst. Not that they were terrible, just that compared to Doves, Futureheads and Bloc Party, they've got nothing.

What can I say? It was undoubtably a very interesting performance, and I think that's what I liked most of all. They have a sound of their own, though weren't as memorable as the other Brit bands; Futureheads, Bloc Party and Doves.

James
I really enjoyed Athletes' show. I thought the energy of the whole thing was really good. My friends and I were all really impressed when the keyboard player rocked out with that theremin-type thing he had. Faaaantastic.

I don't get this anti-Athlete campaign. They were lovely lads, complimentary about Australia, their sound was perfect - you could hear every note and every word. What's not to like about such gorgeous summery breezy songs like 'El Salvador' and 'You got the Style'?? I personally loved their set - it put a smile on my face for the rest of the day!!

Matt
Not as mighty as the Doves but I thoroughly enjoyed the set. Hope to see them again soon at some stage.

I didn't know shit about them b4hand, & I must say I was very impressed! I enjoyed them a lot more than Doves & a bit more than Futureheads, who are the comparable bands.

im hoooked, definately one of the next albums i will buy

Well, they at least got me pumped with the starting song 'El Salvador' and were very individual, the tripped out part where all the lights went crazy and the keyboard player got into his electronic ariel-thingy was one of the highlights of Splendour. Admittedly, the other Brit bands were awesome but Athlete definitely have something. The lead vocalist is magnetic, those eyes... Athlete did it for me.
