Hottest 100 in Numbers

The Wrap Up

The Return of the King

He came to the precipice of Hottest 100 glory in 2015 with monster jam King Kunta – but in 2017 Kendrick Lamar sealed the deal, topping the countdown with ‘HUMBLE.’ and becoming the first person of colour to hit #1. You can also thank Kung Fu Kenny for providing a handy straw poll on the qualities you value most in a partner, according to where you voted his songs: ‘LOVE.’ (#93) is more important than ‘LOYALTY.’ (#98), and no matter the ‘DNA.’ (#34) you want someone who’s ‘HUMBLE.’ (#1) most of all.

Started from the Top Now We Here

Ask any armchair analyst what makes a #1 and you can depend on them to go off on multiple wild theories and analytics. But there’s one thing you can set your watch to: top the poll once and you’ll be back. Just ask Angus & Julia Stone (‘Chateau’, #3 & ‘Snow’, #99), Vance Joy (‘Lay It On Me’, #10), The Rubens (‘Million Man’, #78), Flume (‘Hyperreal’, #91), Macklemore (‘Glorious’, #52) and Queens Of The Stone Age (‘The Way You Used To Do’, #87). It’s actually the fourth time a Hottest 100 has had this many previous #1 artists in a single countdown (equal with 1999, 2009, and 2012).

Running the Numbers

At triple j, numbers are always in style. They’re a big part of how we compile the Hottest 100 each year – from the 100 itself, which is a number, to your top 10 shortlists, which are also numbers. In 2017 you got the memo, voting in ‘6 Pack’ (Dune Rats, #55), ‘Cloud 9’ (Baker Boy, #76), ‘21 Grams’ (Thundamentals, #61), ‘Million Man’ (The Rubens, #77) and ‘1-800-273-8255’ (Logic, #57). Why? One artist, two names: Big Shaq, the fictional UK rapper who made maths quick again when he spat “2 plus 2 is four/minus 1 that’s 3” in ‘Man’s Not Hot’ (#51).

Region for the Stars

Forbes. Merimbula. Forster. Windang. Arnhem Land. Menangle. Byron Bay. Wyong. What do all these places have in common? Well, it’s not train stations: there’s only three between ‘em. But while the hustle and bustle of heavy transport infrastructure might miss them, they’re certainly not missing any musical talent: they’ve bestowed on your 2017 Hottest 100 the likes of Vera Blue, Kim Churchill, Jack River, Hockey Dad, Baker Boy, The Rubens, Skegss and E^ST, respectively.

AIME partnership

Once again triple j is proud to team up with AIME for this year's Hottest 100. Last year we raised over $250,000 together to grow this program which enables more Indigenous kids to finish school and uni. This year we want to do even better to help close the Indigenous education gap.
